Avoid Note
A chord-scale tone that can clash with a chord's sound or function when sustained or strongly emphasized against it. A typical example is F (11) over Cmaj7, a half step above the chord's third, E. It is not a forbidden note. Passing motion, suspensions, different voicings, or a change of harmony can make it useful.
