Characteristic Note

A note that helps define a mode's distinctive sound. Compare modes with the major or natural minor scale on the same tonic. Examples include the natural 6 in Dorian, flat 2 in Phrygian, sharp 4 in Lydian, and flat 7 in Mixolydian. Hear the characteristic note in relation to the tonic to recognize the modal color.
