Guide Tone

In jazz harmony, guide tones are primarily a chord's third and seventh. They define chord quality and help connect successive chords smoothly. In G7, they are B (3) and F (flat 7). Characteristic notes identify modal color, while guide tones reveal chord identity and voice leading.
